Introduction
Christmas is coming! oh,
yeah!! I am sure Christmas time is your best time of the year. Well,
far and away the most important holiday in China is Spring Festival,
also known as the Chinese New Year. To the Chinese people it is as important
as Christmas to people in the West.
This WebQuest is designed for year 11 Chinese learners to take a closer
look of the meaning and the origin of Chinese New Year and to discover
what the origin of the festival,the special representation of each food,
custom, and how the Chinese celebrate their New Year.

The Task
As a group, four
of you have to work out a presentation about Chinese Spring Festival.
Each of the group member should be assigned one role. The four roles
include: Historian A; Historian B; Socioligist and Gourmet.
In next week's class, four of you should be ready for the short presentation
for your class about what you have discovered. You may illustrate your
presentation using posters, postcards, or anything else suitable that
you can find.

A: Origin of Chinese
Spring Festival

China is a majestic
country with a long and interesting history. Every festival in China
has its own history folk. As a historian, your task is to find out the
folks behind Chinese Spring Festival.

B: Chinese Calendar & Zodiac

Chinese spring
festival will be celebrated on 29th of January in 2006. And the date
differs from year to year between January and Feburary. According to
the Chinese Zodiac, the year of 2006 is the year of dog while the year
of 2005 is the year of Rooster.
As a historian,
you need to:
- find out the history of Chinese
lunar calendar and the Chinese Zodiac.
- find out the reasons why
each year in the Chinese calendar is named after an animal.
- find out two personality
characteristics for each Chinese sign (e.g. horse: intelligent,
friendly).
- find the sign to match your
year of birth. Does your personality match the description of your
Chinese sign?
- find the signs to match your
parents' year of birth. Do their personalities match the description
of their Chinese signs?

Chinese Spring
Festival is the most important festival to every Chinese people. There
are many ways to celebrate the festival in different places in China.
Your task is to find out the customs and how the people celebrate Chinese
New Year.

Traditional Food in Spring Festival

Chinese Spring
Festival is a festival filled with special events, foods, and festivities.
People from north and south have different habits about the food they
eat on this special day. As a gourmet, you need to find out the various
of food and the ricipe that people eat during the festival. In the class,
you need to present at least two pictures of the food and explain the
recipes.

Conclusion
I am so proud of you all, you have
done a wonderful job and bring a great benefit to your own comprehension.
Actually, gaining information to accomplish the task is not the main
purpose for this activity. What I expect more is that you know, understand
and respect other culture that are different from your own.

The benefit of using the WebQuest:
The use of Web Quest allows teachers to do a better job in today's challenging
environment, by motivating students in new ways, allowing for students
different learning style. The Web Quest provides students with opportunities
to interact with a wealth of resources, materials, and data sets.
Completing the Web Quest will provide the children with an opportunity
to work collaboratively in small groups. The children will develop communication
and listening skills. They will have opportunities to develop their
research skills using the Internet. The webquest invites a variety of
responses such as written and oral responses, thereby catering for a
wide variety of pupil needs and providing the children with the opportunity
to interact with resources and information that they would otherwise
not have access to.
Objective:
This Web Quest has two objectives. The first and apparent objective
is to have students set up a basic knowledge of Chinese Spring Festival
and let them know the cultural differences and arouse students' interest
of Chinese culture and language. The second objective is to develop
reading comprehension skills and communication skills and and also to
develop skills of working collaboratively in groups.
Level:
This WebQuest is designed for students who is learning Chinese language
as a second language in Year 10.
In order to complete the WebQuest, students will need to know how to
use the internet.
Curriculum Standards:
Outcome MBC.1: A student demonstrates awareness of cross-cultural influences
on language and culture.
Students learn to: reflect on influences in local culture.
Outcome MBC.2: A student demonstrates understanding of significant cultural
values and practices in Chinese- speaking communities.
Students learn to: explore the significance of particular cultural values
and practices, eg celebrations and festivals such as Spring Festival.
